In Appeal A, the window's compatibility with neighbouring windows and respect for the area's design characteristics preserved the conservation area's significance. In Appeal B, the dormer's dark cladding, increased bulk, and visual incongruity caused harm to the conservation area that was not justified by the modest energy efficiency benefit.
