The loss of the bay window and its replacement with a wider extension would upset the pleasant rhythm and balance of the street scene, resulting in harm to the character and appearance of the area that outweighs the benefit of a more comfortable dwelling.

The benefits of providing a more comfortable dwelling for the family were insufficient to outweigh the adverse effects on character and appearance.
