What decided it

The generous dimensions and south-facing orientation of the neighbouring garden, combined with the extension being at a lower level than the neighbour's dwelling, meant that despite the extension's length, the occupiers would not feel hemmed in and would continue to enjoy direct sunlight during the main parts of the day.
