What decided it
The significant visual harm caused by the extension's irregular shape and roof form, which would unbalance the symmetry of the paired properties and appear inconsistent with the established character of the area, outweighed any private benefits to the appellant.
The private benefits of better use of the property and removal of a poorly constructed rear extension were outweighed by the public harm resulting from the visually discordant and character-damaging design of the extension.
