What decided it

The scale, massing and roof design of the extension would alter the dwelling from a simple and compact cottage into a substantially broader and more visually assertive building that would erode the character of the original cottage and unbalance the established relationship between the semi-detached dwellings.

The benefits of improved accessibility, accommodation for future family needs, and environmental resilience were insufficient to outweigh the harm to the character and appearance of the host dwelling and the surrounding area.
